I also act in a lot of Shakespeare, and I've often been cast in male roles, so evolution of acceptable gender roles in theatre over the last 400 years has been interesting to me for years. You're right, it's ironic - to people who know anything about Baroque opera.

AND yes, my decision to mash a blindly patriotic song into a song about sheep was very intentional :DMormolykehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15229529764125882130noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056003626809466540.post-88030261105560482122009-09-06T00:04:31.003-04:002009-09-06T00:04:31.003-04:00Hey! Composer Melissa Dunphy here. Your blog post ...Hey! Composer Melissa Dunphy here. Your blog post came up on a Google search, and I absolutely loved reading it! Thank the lord for like-minded music nerds - I was wondering whether anyone in the audience would get some of the geekier references (Yes! A French overture - that's why it's called a "Freedom Overture" in the score/program/CD liner!).

I really love your discussion of the countertenor voice as well. I knew while writing the songs that there would be inevitable cheap laughs because of the voice type - "God Bless the USA" is such a "masculine" song, but modern social constructs judge a countertenor voice to be feminine or emasculated. However, for me, it was also a chance to explore why that is, so your reaction to the crowd's reaction was spot on. It's a little fascinating to me how uncomfortable we are with anything outside of our predefined concept of gender. At the same time, it seemed like a good chance to poke fun at the songs themselves - particularly the Sousa and Lee Greenwood numbers - which are bombastic to the point of being ridiculous.

Anyway, thank you so much for coming to the show and for your great commentary.Mormolykehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15229529764125882130noreply@blogger.com
